Exploring and evaluating promotional material for existing films: Film 2

Green Lantern is a action film for the age group of 7 to 20 year old, mainly boys interested in the sci-fi action genre of film. They have used animal and human action hero characters to attract its target audience.

Once you open the Green Lantern film website: http://greenlanternmovie.warnerbros.com/dvd/
You come to a screen showing all the characters plus the trailer of the film and buttons where you can either enter the site or promotions for buying/downloading the movie which i think is a good idea to get the views thinking about purchasing the film being the main goal. For obvious reasons, they have a mostly green and black colour scheme giving it a mystical feel. once you enter the site its main focus on the screen is of the main character on a sci-fi action background that gives you defiant idea of what the movie is going to be about and its genre, i think having the main character the focus is a good idea with the layout and it was also balanced site without being to busy. the links are videos, photo gallery, special features, downloads, soundtrack, buy now and other but these were the ones that i thought were the most important parts you much have on your film site.

EXPLORING AND EVALUATING FILM - Avatar

http://www.avatarmovie.com/

The Film Avatar comes under the sci-fi genre. It is a very creative style of film using alien/human-like creatures as the main characters. The storyline is about humans that are mining a precious mineral called Unotanium that exists in Pandora (habitable moon of a giant gas planet). The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe, Navi (species indigenous to Pandora). A group of the humans genetically engineer Na'vi-human hybrid bodies used by a team of researchers to interact with the natives of Pandora.

The feel of this film is clean, crisp, bright and soft within Pandora. It is a very beautiful and lush place, with many green vines and moss, coloured flowers and floating white dandelions. The scene back on earth with the humans is of the opposite with harsh grey, dark grungy feel. They depict this with the machinery around the place.

On the first page entered when opening the film's website you can choose your country which i think is a really good idea so the language changes and most countries have there own Avatar film website. For example: www.avatarthemovie.com.au is the Australian version.

The website layout depicts the sci-fi genre through the colour scheme of the purples and blues giving the fantasy look.

There are many links including dowloads, cast, trailer, images, story, news, music and other things for people who are wanting to find out more about Avatar.

The target audience for the Avatar site would be age 10 up. Most ages would enjoy this film for children to the older who are interested in the sci-fi/fantasy genre.

I think that having a trailer or preview of the movie on the website is important and defiantly makes me want to watching it and want to explore the film site some more. being able to purchase the movie from the website encourages the viewer to buy the film because it is easy and there tempting them.

change with film storyline.

i have decided to change the storyline of my film because we lost alot of the film during the process and it doesn't make sence with the original storyline if we dont do the filming all over again. we don't really have enough time to re-do it all. i have decided for the film to be about a girl who feels she is being follow but really it is all in her head, her thoughts haunting her.

Reflection for Production Task

Pre-Production/Production reflection/evaluation:

Respond to each of the following points (using complete sentences or paragraphs). You should include as much detail as possible in your responses.

1. Describe any problems or difficulties your group encountered during the planning. These may include; organizational problems, group related issues, etc.
2. Clarify any time-management issues your group encountered during the planning process and describe the steps you implemented to improve in this area;
3. Discuss whether your group made effective use of the provided templates to assist the film-making process;
4. Explain whether the planning process helped your group during filming. In particular, discuss whether the use of devices such as storyboards, shot-lists, and rough edits assisted throughout the filming process;
5. Describe any problems or difficulties your group encountered during the filming process. These may include; organization problems, unreliable cast members, group related issues, equipment problems, etc.

6. After reviewing your footage and completing the rough cut of your film, describe any aspects of your film, which need to be addressed. i.e does your group need to reshoot any scenes; are any additional shots required; are there any scenes which worked better than expected.

7. List any skills, techniques or tricks you have discovered during the project.
8. Discuss whether you undertook adequate and detailed reflection to throughout your project. Have you provided enough evidence to support your work? (Look back at your blogs/journals and think about whether it looks like 6 weeks worth of work).

Discuss your feelings about the production task:
9. Are you satisfied with your groups final result?
10. Would like to change any aspects of your film?
11. If you could start the project again what would you do differently?

Reflection For Production Task

We didn't really face any problems during the planning process. maybe a tiny bit of organization but nothing that had a big effect on the planning. We had a few time-management problems when we were shooting and most of the others were ahead of us with the actually film shooting process but we dedicated 2 lessons to just shooting to catch up. I think we used all the templates effectively which helped us. We didn't really use our storyboards when we began shooting, we had a pretty good idea of what we wanted and how so we just went off what we had in our mind that is very similar to what is on the storyboards anyway. We lost most parts of our film in the last week so our rough edit didn't include our whole film. we will need to re-shoot the toy scene when they cover the body and the doll comes close to the screen, this was a best part of the film so it will be essential for it to be re-shot.

Film Still

Mise En Scene:

Style of lighting - the lighting is dark and dull. creating the feel of loneliness, it also shows a candle which brings the genre of romance through this still shot.

Types of props - the candle is used to create the romance feel by the window as well as the telephone that makes us think she is waiting for a call from a certain person.

Setting - it is set in the bedroom of the actor, it seems really comforting and homely.

Acting - the actors body language seems down and upset about something, like she is impatiently waiting for something.

Indiana Jones

Genre:
this film is a adventure and action type movie. This is because of the high and low angles, characters that make up the film and the scene lighting and setting as it's mostly based in a jungle. Cuts were used in this to give a sence of what going on around them and build suspense.

Style of Acting:
Body language is a style that is used in this movie to create the feelings of the sence. The way he didn't show fear and seemed invicaible added to his character.

Props:
The whip was a main prop to the character of Indiana Jones to show how he can "do things with his bare hands" and had enough strength without having to have weapons like guns. The gold goblet/ statue resembled power and wealth that is presumed to belong to the tribe. The spiders were imbolic of the acient cave and bring fear to the readers.

Lighting:
The lighting displayed the humidity out in the jungle thought the make up, body and clothes. Once they entered the cave the feeling became ery and the temperature had dropped.

Setting:
The setting was in the jungle which resembles adventure.

Mise En Scene

This is the combination of all the visual elements within the frame.
(frame: the physical boundary that contains what the audience sees)

Ikea Ad:
This story thing was about an old lamp who was abandoned and kicked out of the home and replaced by a new lamp. It is left out in the rain on the side of the street. All of the props are very warm and cosy, the couch is earthy colours and looks comfortable. The person is also wearing warm colored clothing. The garbage bag is a prop that is brought out when the lamp is placed on the side of the street to show that the lamp is classified as trash. Orange/yellow tones of lighting are shown when inside the home to create a sence of home and comfort within the set and once it shows the outside sences on the street it turns all grey and gloomy to show loneliness and sadness.

Titanic:
The sound and props eg: doors, made the sence of suspense through out this clip. The two guys who are standing watching over the ship, they show fear through their acting once they hit the iceberg. The lighting was quite dark with little lighting except in the steam room to show the heat within that area. The steam room scene made a lot of tension once they found out about the iceberg and the actors change from all joking around to a stressful mess, lots of movement and panic fills the room.

Cat & Alice - analysis

This is a high angle/over shoulder shot. Alice in being look down on over the cats shoulder showing how far she is down from where he is up in the tree he was resting on. This background is dark and dull creating a ery scene in the forest she's walking through. Gives off a mysterious feeling to the shot.

Mad hatter

The mad hatter is taken from a close up shot to emphasize on his facial expression. He is portrayed as a crazy character that's shown by his teeth, hair and eyes. The background is very dull but he is very bright and make up is done lively.

Shot analysis

This scene has been taken as a Low angle shot to create suspense and showing how high and risky the situation is. It is also a wide shot to show the perspective of the room, like he is in a in-closed inescapable room which could relate to his metal state. Colour of the lighting is dull and cold to create the feeling on isolation and him wanting to escape. These things are all carefully chosen.

Queen

This shot is a low angle/over shoulder angle which creates a feeling of power the queen has over the frog which is who's shoulder the camera is angled from. The onlooker placed in the background shows how powerful she is in her own palace and how they are try and look like her with their glued on big noses and ears, they are her followers. The makeup and acting really emphasis what is happening in this scene.

Shot types

The shot types really influence the way the audience feels about the certain parts the film.
The shots types include:
- wide/long shot
- medium shot
- close up
- extreme close up
- low angle
- high angle

class notes

A shot is a continuous piece of filming without interruption from the time the camera is turned on and starts filming until it is turned off. In general, shots don't last more than 10 seconds.

Cinema is a visual art form. Cinema is not literature. A film is not a novel.

An edit is a break in the film where one shot ends and the next shot begins.
Four common types of edits are:
- cuts
- dissolves
- fades
- wipes

As scene is a collection of shots, arranged through editing, into specific order.
